2008 Races

Jan 26 - Frostbite Series Half-Marathon - 1:12:55, 4th overall
5:35, 5:34, 5:36, 5:43, 5:16, 5:38, 5:09, 5:23, 5:24, ...  - Ran w/ Zac and Mike through 9 miles (Mike had splits on his watch that I got afterwards) then my body crashed and I faded back.  My garmin apparently stopped working so don't know splits last 4.1mi other than I was 5:29avg thru 9mi and 5:46avg the last 4.1mi (ouch).  Dusty caught me around 12.5mi and I tried to hang but I was done so I finished 4th overall - not bad though as it was my 2nd best time in this distance at this point!

Feb 24 - Mardi Gras Marathon - 2:40:11, 4th overall (1:14:49 and 1:25:22 half splits)
    5:45, 5:39, 5:35, 5:36, 5:32, 5:36, 5:33, 5:37, 5:42, 5:48, 5:53, 5:49, 5:39, 5:51, 6:04, 6:06, 6:15, 6:10, 6:17, 6:27, 6:41, 6:36, 6:45, 6:55, 7:02, 6:59

May 17 - COMTREA 5K - 17:44, 2nd overall
5:31, 5:49, 5:54, 0:29(5:38pace) - First race that I ever ran with an iPod.  Figured that would help keep my mind off from "racing" this one and just run to the music at my own pace - worked out well actually.  After taking several weeks/months off from running I only really got in 2 easy runs prior to this race in the week leading up and decided to try out the knee and see how it held up (doing strides the day before it actually felt much better at a faster pace...).  My goal was to shoot for a 19min hopefully, if I had a really great day then maybe finish in the 18min or so...so to run this time I was very surprised with the lack of fitness.  I did feel out of shape though as after a mile or so it was the gradual slow down...amazing how quickly that goes!  I could see first place for most of the race but I didn't want to push the knee that hard so I was content to just run my own and see what happened from there.

Jun 1 - Make Tracks for the Zoo 5K (3.16mi) - 18:00, 10th overall / 2nd age group
5:34, 6:03, 5:33, 0:50(5:18pace) - The goal in this race was to pace AJ to a sub 18min time, so I was running this for him.  I did bring the iPod again and wore that to help get in my pace.  The plan was to hit around 5:40ish first mile and build from there - the start wasn't bad but AJ had to drop back a few times to rejoin me as the lead pack and the chase pack brought us through a little quick.  Around 1.5mi I tried to throw in a little surge to move to the next group but eventually had to pull off to the right and allow AJ to rejoin me as we tried to keep a decent pace - other runners began passing us while I tried to keep AJ close to me running.  2nd mile was way too slow and if he had any desire to break 18 it needed to be now...and he threw in a nice surge so I went with, but then shortly after he slowed up again and that was it.  I lingered for awhile before choosing to see what I could do to finish and after he had yelled to go on, I took off - now my intent was to see how many guys I could catch before the finish.  I switched gears and just ran people down 1 by 1 and moved up a lot.  Not happy with the time being what it is as hadn't run that slow since Sophomore year HS, but I'm confident had I "raced" it the outcome would have been similar to the COMTREA or a lower 17min range.

Aug 9 - Ghisallo Scorcher 4 Mile - 20:35, 2nd overall (PR)
5:09, 5:15, 5:05, 5:04 - HILLY!  Ran with Dusty through 3 miles before he made a small move and then we maintained even pace but had a little gap.  I started to close a little bit but he held on for the win.  Had no idea what to run in this, just went on feel - worked out perfect!  New PR by a minute.  Legs felt great and never looked at splits till after the race.

Sep 7 - Milstadt Biathlon 5 Mile - 25:50, 1st overall run, PR (8K split 25:41, PR)
4:55, 5:21, 5:13, 5:19, 5:01 - Another course with a lot of hills!  Took it out from the gun and never looked back, had about 2 minutes over 2nd runner by the finish.  Body just felt really good and once more didn't bother looking at time during the run till afterwards, let the legs feel their way through.  Came away with 2 PR's, both in the 8K split and 5M finish.

Sep 21 - Shoreline Classic 15K (9.4mi) - 49:59, 7th overall, PR (10K split 33:10, road PR)

Nov 27 - Chesterfield Turkey Trot 5K - 15:49, 4th overall / 2nd age group (Road PR)
4:58, 5:15, 5:02, 0:34(5:19pace) - Felt great for the most part.  Ran to have fun and went out with Mike and the eventual winner.  At 1 mile was when the winner put on a move and we ran single file.  I had stayed close to Mike through 2 miles, then he began to pull away and the guy behind me caught me by 3mi and we ran together briefly before he pulled away.  The finish felt like slow-motion as my body just wouldn't go, but I was pleasantly surprised to see the time at least!  I thought I would for sure be in the 16min range again on how I felt.  Rolling hills on the course.
